>> good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us on this cinco de mayo sunday. i'm carolyn tyler. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning to you. certainly breezy out there and clouds are with us owe temperatures mainly in the 50s. a couple lower 6os also around the bay. we will keep the clouds with us and the breeze. that will make for a cooler day so afternoon highs ranging from the upper tuesday to just the mid-70s in our warmest inland east bay. we cool down yesterday. more cooling today and the possibility of a few sprinkles but the best chance of showers comes our way tomorrow. a slow warmup for the week ahead. i'll explain a little later. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. the california highway patrol is

the lead agency investigating why a limousine burst into flames, killing five passengers and injuring four more. it happened last night on the san mateo bridge. kira klapper joins us live from the scene. kira, all lanes just opened a short time ago? >> they did. all the lanes reopened about an hour ago but it it was a very different scene a few hours ago when all of the west bound lanes were shut down because of the fiery wreckage. we have photos taken just as the limo is being consumed in flames. a passerby snapped these two photos. the white stretch photo was carrying nine women from alameda to foster city when for some reason about 10:00 last night smoke started coming out of the back of the limo. the quick quickly turned to flames. the driver was pulling over at that time to investigate what was happening, why there was smoke coming out of the back of the limo, so he did escape. four of the female passengers

also escaped, but the other five women were trapped inside and killed. >> i was trying to help but when there is smoke and there is fire, some people, you know, they become overcome by it. it can really take over. >> the identities of the five women who were killed are not yet being released, but we do know all of the women were in their 30s. all four of the survivors were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and burns. the driver was not injured. the chp is investigating why the limo caught fire and trying to figure out exactly where the smoke started coming from. they do believe it started in the back, but they aren't sure where, in the trunk. they do know no other cars were involved in that fire, that no accident caused the fire either. reporting live in san mateo, kira klapper, abc7 news. >> we will look for more details today. thank you, kira. a 30-year-old man is in

critical, but stable condition after being shot in east palo alto last night. it happened shortly after nine on cooley avenue. victim was found on the street. police are going door to door to gather information. so far there are no suspects are motives. antioch police are investigating the shooting death of a man in front of a hotel early yesterday morning. police responding to a 911 call found a 38-year-old man on east 18th street. he had been shot numerous times. he died at the scene. they have no details on a suspect, and they are hoping anyone with information about give detectives a call. in southern california the massive springs fire that's expected to be fully contained by tomorrow. an area roughly the size of san francisco, 43 square miles, has already been burned by the wildfire in camarillo. the fire 66% contained at 26,000 acres. more than 2,000 firefighters are still on the lines, including

several strike teams from the bay area. yesterday one of them suffered a serious head injury when he slipped and fell fighting the fire. it's steep country. it hasn't burned in a long time. get a little water on the hillside, it gets slick. it's very tough going. some of our cruz were operating with a five hour walk in just to get to the fire line. >> those cruise are putting out small flareups and others of battling hotspots. it looks like the worst is over. 15 homes and 5 businesses are damaged but 25 outbuildings were also destroyed by that fire. back here in the bay area a fire in san ramon destroyed one house and damaged another yesterday afternoon as our reporter lisa tells us, firefighters are still looking for a cause. >> did you see that? >> just about everyone on lexington place and san ramon

saw the house burst into flames. huge plumes of smoke billowed out of the house. they could be seen for miles. that's where julia hall was when she responded the smoke. and i said is it our house? they said yeah. the house she spent 25 years in was burning, quickly disappearing before her eyes. as if that wasn't enough, the fire spread from her home to her neighbor's house. >> it appears that the fire started in the carport between the two houses, ran up the side of the house and then got into the attic of both house. >> her neighbor, who is on vacation, only had damage to the garage and attic. the brunt of the fire was focused here. at one point the house was so unstable firefighters were forced to pull out of it. they worried it could collapse. >> the attic space caught fire, and there was a series of explosions. i think the tires on the vehicle were popping. i think the windows on the house blew out. so it was pretty intense for a

while. >> crews were fighting the fire from above but they couldn't stop it. >> my needles, my test strips -- >> she quickly remembered what was left. >> my parents just passed away in the last few years and left me a lot of family memorabilia from 1642 on and it's all gone. >> no one was hurt in the fire and no one had to be evacuated the firefighters stopped the fire from spreading to any more homes. >> firefighters say the wind and heat played a role in how quickly that fire spread. a homeowner sent us these pictures showing how close a vegetation came to his property. the three-acre blaze was quickly brought under control. at least two homes were threatened by the fire. there was no damage. the fire began when a homeowner was mowing and hit a rock, causing a spark.

in the east bay town of crockett, 15 mile-an-hour winds did not stop crews from quickly putting out a four acre grass fire. it closed the closer of an eastbound lane of highway 80 just for a quick time. no injuries have been reported. starting tomorrow police will have another tool in their arsenal to keep bart riders and workers safe. it's a new state law allowing bart to ban trouble makers from entering stations and riding trains. nick smith has the story. >> i've been shoved, i've been punched. >> antoinette and her fellow bart employees said they have scored a victory against violent passengers. >> the bill gives us the ability for the fact if someone is a repeater, they can be expelled from the system. >> a provision that isn't currently granted to bart employees or its passengers. the law will make it a criminal

for those banned to return to regional bart system or use a public system for one year. but some have fierce of overreached. >> incidents have happened over the years. i have seen tragic things happen but you have to be careful on who you profile. >> as a person of color, i'm certainly sensitive to those types of issues. >> he said retraining of officers and community outreach was instituted before the new law went into effect. >> no anybody that feels that they are being mistreated by the police officers or unfairly targeted, they have many, many avenues to seek out and get relief. >> race is not an issue, should not be one, nor should geographic location of the bart station. this is system-wide. >> ab716 won't only target violent behavior, it applies to protesters that have been

arrested during free speech movements. identifying and stopping those that are cited and banned from re-entering may not be possible, but employees and passengers will feel better knowing a new rule may apply. tomorrow oakland leaders and police will hold a community meet to go discuss two recent homicides that occurred in the area near children's hospital. last night a 21-year-old was shot and killed right in front of her four-year-old son as they stood on the connor of 5 fourth street and shattuck avenue. and friday night two others were wounded about a block away. res defense are rightfully concerned about the violence and will have a chance to and police questions. he said tomorrow night's meetings won'ting limited to just that area around children's hospital. the meeting is from seven to nine at the oakland senior center on martin luther king

attorney george is calling on silicone valley companies to create phone technology that takes away any incentive to steal smartphones. it's not just a big crime problem in the bay area, there's a nationwide epidemic of cell phone robberies and thefts. the devices are selling like hot cakes in certain overseas black markets so he wants phone companies to include a kill switch that would render the phones useless if stolen. more than a million phones were stolen in the u.s. in the past year. nearly one in three robberies nationwide now involves a mobile phone. starting in the fall, a highly anticipated database begins to track cell phones that are reported stolen. well, you can call it the sequel to the keyboard and the mouse and one big computer maker is betting this sequel will be better than the original. abc7 news reporter jonathan

on consumers is important for us. >> abc7 news. happy cinco de mayo. one of the biggest celebrations anywhere take place in san jose. each year the celebration includes musicians, dancers, venders and activists and guadalupe pay river park. there is no city sponsorship of the festival because hard economic times forced the city to make difficult budget choices but private sponsors have stepped up to provide a traditional downtown parade and other festivities that attract about 300,000 people each year. the big celebration includes stepped-up traffic control for the large crowds that typically turn out downtown and in east san jose. and while a vast majority of people enjoy a save celebration, people will add extra staffing to make sure it stays that way for everyone, and that includes extra patrol officers. san jose police will be conducting gaining suppression with the help of santa clara county probation officers and state parole agents. you can expect a lot of traffic along the king road corridor in

eat san jose and downtown is going to be even more congested this year because the sharks have a playoff game at 7:00 at hp pavilion. so talk about a combination there. plus going to be a little cooler today in san jose and everywhere else, according to meteorologist lisa argen. >> yeah. we have a wind advisory in effect from san francisco down along the san mateo county coast and you may have noticed very breezy out there with the south winds gusting to over 30 miles an hour. right on down through the santa cruz mountains it will be breezy until the evening hours. so definitely take care if you are driving along highway 1. kau en see some of the small tree limbs, power lines they may be downed by some of the gusty winds. that definitely occurring along the coast. the north bay has been wendy as well, but we don't have the wind advisory up for the north bay. live doppler 7hd picking up a few returns offshore. we are looking at an area of low

pressure that will situate itself off the coast in the next day or so. that will keep things interesting around here. here's a look outside from the embarcadero camera. 61 in oakland. a warm spot. 65 san jose. and 57 downtown san francisco. from our sutro camera, we do have the clouds around. it is clear in livermore right now. pretty much more everyone else we will have cloud cover this morning breaking out into partly cloudy skies this afternoon. starting out cooler in some spots with mid-50s from santa rosa out through livermore and los gatos at 56 degrees this morning. the forecast highlights calling for mostly cloudy skies to start out. partly cloudy, cool and breezy this afternoon. the best chance of rain comes our way, showers this the higher elevations. look for it tomorrow afternoon through the evening hours. now today you can see maybe a few sprinkles around, but overall it's the afternoon hours. we see the greatest instability there. here's a look at the current

wind gusts. you notice up to 25 miles an hour out of of of out of the south. 33 miles an hour wind gusts half moon bay. by the delta it's clear but the wind gusts keeping it chilly today. a raw feeling out there for sure in the east bay and also san carlos. a huge about-face from where we were last week at this time. here's what is going to happen. the low will ten to drift off the coast. not a lot of moisture associated with t but when it gets right here, it's going to pull up some more moisture from the south. that will bring a better chance of showers our way today. but it looks like around 2:00 tomorrow through the evening hours. it will pull up some of the subtropical moisture and maybe we could see an isolated shower, maybe a thunderstorm higher elevations and by tuesday it should move out. temperatures today 60s, 70s south bay and 70 san jose. 67 santa cruz. low 90s for much of last week. 70 redwood city and 60s at the coast but it will be gusty.

>> have you ever heard of a sport called gold ball? probably not but it's been around since world war ii. it's played by veterans who are visually impaired by combat. now a few students at berkeley visually impaired, as well as their classmates, are testing it out.

our reporter did too. >> reporter: six players take the court. one team member throws the ball from one end to the other. the opposition tries to block it. in gold ball the players are usually blind. but for this class, u.c. berkeley professor decided to combine visually impaired students with those who are not. >> it's really opening up literally the eyes of individuals to say, wow, if i were visually impaired or if i were blind, how would the world be for me? >> okay. so this is ski goggles that's been completely blacked out. someone wearing it can't wear a thing. >> do you want me to put it on? >> put it on just like you would a ski goggle. >> once the goggles go on, your world goes black. >> as soon as the blindfold is on, everybody is equal. >> alex plays soccer for cal. gold ball was a new and different experience for him. >> you are basically going back

mountains. wind gusts up to 45 miles an hour are possible. temperatures in the 60s. today once again thecology trend continues with highs just from the upper 50s, lower 60s at the coast. turning partly cloudy to the mid-70s inland. we will keep the partly cloudy clouds with us today. we will add in the chance of showers tomorrow. i'll let you know when and how much and if we are going to warm up coming up. >> thank you, lisa. breaking news in san francisco right now. firefighters are working on a house fire on treasure island. this video just into our newsroom. it broke out just before 4:00 this morning on sturgeon street. crews are still on the scene. it's too soon to know exactly how the fire started. we will update you as more information becomes available. but again, it looks like a pretty fierce house fire there on treasure island. a horrific incident on the

san mateo bridge has killed five women. it happened late last night when a limousine burst into flames. four other women were injured. kira klapper joins us live near the span with the latest details. good morning, kira. >> good morning to you, carolyn. those four survivors are currently being treated in two separate hospitals here in the bay area for burn injuries and smoke inhalation. we have some photos obtained while the limo was on fire. some passersby snapped these photos. you can see the limo is quickly taken over by flames. it's a white stretch limo. this happened about 10:00 last night as the driver was carrying nine women from alameda to foster city. for some reason smoke started coming out of the back of the limo. as the driver pulled over to examine what was happening, the limo was weekly taken over by fire. that driver was able to escape. he was already out of the limo

as it was happening. four of the passengers also escaped. but five women were trapped inside and killed. the fiery wreckage shut down the westbound lanes of the san mateo bridge for a few hours. we do know all of the women were in their 30s and early 40s, and again, the four survivors who are in the hospital right now are being treated for smoke inhalation and burn injuries. i just got off the phone with the c. highway patrol. they said the four women will be integral in their investigation because they still want to understand where the smoke started coming from, how the fire grew so quickly. those women will be an important part of their investigation once the women are released from the hospital and actually able to speak more with officers. also, they are questioning the driver of the limo. they let him go home for the night so he can sleep but they say he is cooperating and it will take them a few days to piece together how this horrible fire happened. reporting live in san mateo, kira klapper, abc7 news.

>> kira, as you said, those four survivors should provide some key information for investigators. thank you. police in con raw costa county are investigating after two people died in a head on traffic collision yesterday afternoon. aa blue subaru crashed into a tw truck and then into a tree around 1:30 in the afternoon. they have not said why the s.u.v. veered into oncoming traffic. the two people killed were riding in the subaru. one died at the crash site. the other after being taken by helicopter to a local trauma center. an east bay father who lost his two children to a drugged-out driver two years ago is taking a new approach to stopping drug prescription use. nannette miranda explains how. >> a juriy convicted the driver who killed two bay area children ten years ago because she was under the influence of

prescription medication that she had gotten from several different doctors. the kids' father sued for medical malpractice but the maximum he could get under california's mel injury compensation reform act or micra is $250,000 for each child. >> my road to justice was a punch in the gut when i learned about the law in california. >> california families who have received experienced death or injury due to medical malpractice say it's time to owe eliminate the quarter million dollars cap set nearly four decades ago. they have teamed up with consumer watch dogs to get lawmakers to change it or else they will get a ballot measure ready for 2014 to let voters decide. >> you eliminate the cap, it's a risky maneuver. doctors say removing the limit will result in skyrocketing healthcare costs. plus they predict merit less lawsuits will drive figures to other states just as obamacare

takes effect. >> we don't want to upset the applecart when we are trying to increase access for medical care. >> they point out they have other ways to recover lost wages and punitive dams which don't have measures. interesting it was jerry brown who signed the cap into law in 1975 when i was governor the first time around. he may have a chance to change it and prevent it if the legislature acts. her son alex died in the er, she just wants the system changed because they say his life is worth more than $250,000. >> we have to fix it now. we are mad as ellis and we are not going to put up with this anymore. we just around. >> lawmakers have until mid-september to pass a law. nannette miranda, abc7 news. scientists say video games could help baby boomers stay sharp in golden years. they tested people between 50 and 64 in two separate groups.

those who played video games or did difficult crossroad puces he would for ten hours and those who did not. they found the gamers showed improvement in problem solvering memory and perception over their counter parts who did not play games. in tests a year later they found the benefits stuck around. they believe the games can help fend off mental decline. they also saw similar results for people 65 and older. a young man president obama mentioned in a speech as a living example of perseverance and dedication walked across a stage in belmont this weekend. back in 2009 in an address to school children the president singled out donny schultz, then a freshman at notre dame and the university. he had brain cancer since he was three and more than 12 surgeries. >> i find it inspiring that i can go fourth and live the dream that he put forth for kids like

me, that i have gone through life experiences like i have. and still stick with it and be able to graduate from college. >> donny received his bachelors degree in business administration. congratulations! >> several passengers and crew aboard a cruiseliner who docked in san francisco yesterday had to be quarantined after a suspected noro virus outbreak. the crystal symphony passengers started feeling symptoms after leaving british columbia tuesday. a spokesperson said all of them were kept onboard while the ship made it's call in san francisco. that ship left yesterday afternoon bound for santa barbara. coming up on abc7 news, a breakthrough in dyslexia treatment. the product the fda has approved to help those who suffer from that condition. and we have a live look from our emery riel cam. it is currently 59 degrees in that east bay city.

forecast. for both children and adults who struggle with dyslexia, reading can often be a challenge but now a system of lenses has won clearance from the food and drug administration to treat certain symptoms associated that condition. here's abc7 news health and science reporter carolyn johnson with the details. he laid at the judge's feet. >> for her reading jack's classic is "the call of the wild" is less of a struggle than a few months ago. >> it was really hard to read because the words would float, the words would flip back and forth. >> she has been diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning disability that impairs one's ability to read quickly and accurately. appreciates is often impacted as well. several months ago an opt tom terrorist fitted her with lenses. >> i was skeptical when i first

got the lenses in. i knew they worked for color vision but i wasn't sure for dyslexia. do you like one or do you like two? he said it modifies the wavelength of light entering each eye. one theory is dyslexia eyes aren't processing information at the same speed. the idea is with the lens the correct combination can challenge the speed with which the images will travel through the eyes to key optical pathways in the brain. >> they discovered by changing wave lengths by filters, they could actually cause better communication between the two sides of the brain. >> the lenses have been used to treat problems of color perception or reading disorders for years, but the doctor who serves on the board of governor for the san francisco opt metric society said the use for dyslexia is a departure because most experts consider the condition neurological in origin. >> dyslexia is treated by a --

opt tom terrorists treats not in efficiencies of the system such as focusing, and tracking. >> and lack of research supporting the effectiveness in treating dyslexia. so far there's been just one large scale study of 150 dyslexic students sponsored by the company which claims the lenses helped more than half of those students. but supporters like dr. swanson leave there will be a growing body of evidence as use of the lenses becomes more widespread. >> it's too new. it's very, very new. >> it's back from the road. >> i am a believer because i've seen it work. >> and carolyn said the cost of the lenses, including having them fitted, runs between $700 and $1,000. despite the fda approval, they are typically not covered by insurance. lisa argen here now talking about a much cooler weather forecast. windy too, out there this morning. >> exactly. not only the temperature cooled down, but the south winds adding to the chill out thereof. here's a look from our roof

that proposal looks like. meteorologist lisa argen is here now with a check of the accuweather forecast. >> yeah. nothing subtle about our weather. we are talking about a big change with wind. so we have a wind advisory in san mateo county coast down through the santa cruz mountain through 9:00. the winds have been gusting. but ivan in the north bay without the advisory has been very breezy. east bay we are looking at winds around the delta. up to 30 miles an hour. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. you see a few returns off the coast. we still are talking about some unstable air in the atmosphere throughout the next couple of days due to an area of low pressure headed our way. here's a look from our roof camera. you can see all the cloud cover out there. 57 san francisco, 59 in san carlos. mid-50s half moon bay and santa cruz. the marine layer is mixed out, but we have the cloud cover with us. you see the vantage point over the city with some good mixing

allowing for the cool-down with temperatures actually just around normal or a bit below normal today. 57 in union city. 56 in napa with mid-50s santa rosa. normal should be about 54 san francisco, 72 santa rosa and about 74 in san jose. so the cloudy skies this morning, windy conditions along the coast with the wind advisory until 9:00 from the peninsula, san mateo coast, can't cruz mountains. the best chance of showers comes in tomorrow afternoon through the evening hours. so the winds right now from the delta up to 30 miles an hour. napa you can see a 21 mile-an-hour wind gust as well as novato over 20 miles an hour. oakland, san carlos, definitely looking at the gusts out there. 31 mile-an-hour wind gusts half moon bay. here's a look what you can expect throughout the day today. most of the activity, the showers or the instability offshore, but as the low continues to track to the west and set up along the coast, the couldn'ter clockwise flow around it will be pulling up moisture.

the better chance of rain comes our way by mid-afternoon tomorrow into the evening hours. so you notice 4:00. we are looking at a few returns and the possibility of some light showers. right now we do have some rain over the tahoe valley airport. the rain extending from the sierra nevada through the central valley. also right along the coast by late tomorrow. so kind of unusual, but we can use any rainfall that we can get. here's a look at the week ahead in san jose. today about 70. same deal tomorrow and wednesday. thursday it's going to take toward next weekend until we warm up. it will be above normal again, about 80 this time next week. 70 in san jose. we talk about that. 69 santa clara. you notice that the coast will see the temperatures in the 60s. the breezy wind, 6 san mateo, with mid-60s san francisco. so right around average. a few 70s and notice the green, maybe a few higher elevation sprinkles from petaluma and back to the upper 60s for berkeley. low 70s for fremont.
